ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
PREVENTION TIPS
1. Handling Electric Fires
* DO NOT try putting out with water. As water conducts electricity, this will worsen the situation and makes it more dangerous.
* Use a Class C fire extinguisher or automatic fire extinguishing system.
2. Ground Faults
* Ground faults occurs when electricity does not use the regular wiring route to the ground.
* Install GFCI (Ground-Fault-Circuit-Interrupter) in locations near water will minimise fault risks. The GFCI will turn off the power in an event of power fluctuation.
3. Arc/Spark Faults
* The arc results in high-intensity heat that can burn materials around it thereby causing an electric fire. Usually associated with old wiring or those chewed away by rats.
* Install AFCI (Arc-Fault-Circuit-Interrupter) to cut off the power in an event of an arc to protect tou and family from fire hazard.
4. Over plugging
* This is a common electrical mistake. We tend to plug many appliances to one spot mainly due to lack of sockets.
* By doing so, the number of amps being used increase, increasing chance of short circuits and fire.
* Good rule of thumb – one plug per socket in each outlet and unplug anything not being used (reduces “phantom power” being used hence save on electricity bills)
5. Use Of Extension Cords
* Approximately 3,300 home fires start with extension cords annually (Electrical Safety Foundation International). Faulty, frayed or loose extension cords are dangerous to use for extended period of time as they can heat up quickly.
* Important to match the right extension cord with the right appliance.
